For most Android buyers, the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the best foldable phone of 2026. At a $1,899 US list price it is the only Android foldable in this group rated IP68 for dust and water, and it gets the large 8-inch inner screen that Samsung saves for its $2,099.99 Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. If you are staying on iOS, the choice is made for you: the iPhone Duo is Apple's only foldable, starts at $1,999, and does not reach buyers until October 23.

Foldables are no longer one Samsung phone plus a few alternatives. This holiday season there are four serious options from three makers, and they differ in the ways that matter once the first week is over: weight in a pocket, what happens when the phone meets sand or a spilled drink, and how many years of updates you are paying for. All prices and specs below come from each maker's own store and spec pages, as of September 2026.

Which foldable phones are worth buying in 2026?

Four phones are worth considering in the US right now:

• Apple iPhone Duo: Apple's first foldable. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16 and it goes on sale October 23, according to Apple's store page.
• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8: the lightest phone here, on sale now from $1,899.99 before trade-in.
• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra: Samsung's big-screen version, from $2,099.99 before trade-in.
• Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold: announced August 13 alongside the rest of the Pixel 11 line and running Google's Tensor G6 chip.

Last year the question was whether a book-style foldable was a productivity tool or an expensive compromise. What has changed is that Apple has entered, and that Samsung and Google both now attach up to seven years of software support to these phones, which makes a $1,900-plus foldable easier to treat as a long-term purchase.

Demand also looks healthy. Yonhap News Agency reported 1.44 million pre-orders for Samsung's Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8 combined, more than the Galaxy Note 10's 1.38 million, according to 9to5Google. That figure covers all three phones and is Yonhap's number, not an audited Samsung sales total.

Two things in the table are easy to miss. First, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and the Fold 8 Ultra have the same screen sizes, 8 inches inside and 6.5 inches outside, but the Pixel costs $200 less. Second, the phone with the smallest screens, the iPhone Duo, is also the heaviest.

Which foldable is the best value?

On list price, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold ($1,899) and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 ($1,899.99) are tied. The Pixel gives you more for the same money: a larger 8-inch inner screen, a full-size 6.5-inch outer screen, and IP68 instead of IP48. The Fold 8's advantage is physical. At 201 g it is 38 g lighter than the Pixel, the kind of difference you notice in a jacket pocket every day.

Trade-ins change the picture. On the day we checked, the US Google Store listed the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at "from $1,269" after an eligible trade-in. Samsung and Apple run their own trade-in and carrier offers, and these change weekly. Compare the price after your own trade-in, not the headline number.

Storage pricing matters more on the iPhone Duo than anywhere else. Apple charges $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB. A foldable encourages you to keep more video, documents and offline media on the phone, so decide on the storage tier before you compare prices. Otherwise the $1,999 figure will mislead you.

How durable are foldable phones now?

Durability is where the platforms differ most, and where a foldable purchase usually goes wrong.

Water and dust. The iPhone Duo and Pixel 11 Pro Fold are both rated IP68. Apple specifies a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under IEC standard 60529. Both Samsung models are rated IP48. Samsung's Ultra page describes that as "enough water resistance to protect your device against accidental spills." The first digit is the one to watch. A 4 means protection against solid objects over roughly 1 mm, not the dust-tight protection a 6 indicates. If you spend time at beaches, on job sites or with a phone loose in a bag, that gap matters more than any spec on the spec sheet.

Materials. Apple lists a titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. In its Pixel 11 Pro Fold announcement, Google describes a new gearless hinge with a larger bend radius for a less visible crease, a glass fiber composite back "designed to be nearly impossible to crack," and an outer screen of ceramic cover glass. Google calls the phone "three times more durable than last year's device." That is Google's own claim, not an independent test result.

The honest caveat. None of these phones has been through a full year of real-world use yet, and the iPhone Duo is a first-generation hinge from a company that has never shipped one. The Fold 8 is Samsung's eighth-generation Fold. That history does not show up on a spec sheet, but it is the strongest argument for buying a Samsung if you want the least risk. Whichever phone you choose, put the cost of an extended warranty or care plan into your budget. A folding inner screen is typically among the most expensive repairs on a foldable.

Does software matter more than hardware on a foldable?

Yes. On a foldable the software decides whether the big screen is a second workspace or just a stretched phone app.

Samsung has spent years building multitasking features for its Fold line, and many Android apps have been adjusted for its screen shapes. Samsung promises up to seven OS upgrades and security updates on both Fold 8 models. One thing to check if you are coming from an older Fold with S Pen support: Samsung's own US pages say neither the Galaxy Z Fold 8 nor the Fold 8 Ultra supports the S Pen. If handwriting or sketching on the inner screen is part of how you work, factor that in.

Google positions the Pixel 11 Pro Fold around Gemini and lists foldable-specific multitasking tools, including Bubbles, drag and drop, split screen and Instant View. Google's policy gives Pixel 8 and later phones 7 years of updates, counted from the date the device first went on sale on the US Google Store. On cameras, Google lists a 48MP main camera and a 5x telephoto with up to 30x Super Zoom.

Apple has the biggest open question. Hardware-wise the iPhone Duo is a well-specified phone, with an A20 Pro chip, a 48MP Dual Fusion rear camera system and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen. What no one can judge before October 23 is how well iPhone apps use a 7.6-inch folding screen on day one, and how quickly developers adapt. For a buyer, that means paying a premium today for an app experience you cannot yet test.

• Best for most Android buyers: Pixel 11 Pro Fold ($1,899). The biggest screens at the lowest top-tier price, IP68, 7 years of updates, and a 5x telephoto camera. The cost is weight: 239 g.
• Lightest and most comfortable: Galaxy Z Fold 8 ($1,899.99). 201 g and 4.5 mm thick unfolded, from a company on its eighth Fold. You give up screen size, dust protection (IP48) and S Pen support.
• Biggest Samsung screens: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra ($2,099.99). The same 8.0-inch and 6.5-inch screens as the Pixel in a thinner (4.1 mm) and lighter (215 g) body, with a 5,000 mAh battery. You pay about $200 more than the Pixel, still get IP48, and, like the standard Fold 8, it has no S Pen support.
• For iPhone users: iPhone Duo ($1,999). The only foldable that runs iOS, IP68 rated, with a titanium frame and hinge cover. It is the heaviest phone here (254 g), its screens are the smallest, and it is a first-generation product. If you are buying it as a gift, the October 16 pre-order date matters more than the October 23 launch.

The overall picture: the Pixel wins on value, Samsung wins on proven hardware and weight, and Apple wins by being the only choice for iPhone users.
