Three differences matter for training.
The coarse scale is a feature. A 0-100 score invites people to treat a drop from 74 to 71 as meaningful. On a 0-10 scale with four named verdicts, that false precision largely goes away. For a recreational athlete, a verdict ("Pace Yourself") is easier to act on than a percentage you then have to interpret. The cost is resolution. Is the "most accurate heart rate sensor" claim credible?
The claim is Apple's, and it rests on a study Apple designed and ran. Apple's newsroom says the study covered "a diverse population of over 1,000 participants" and found "Apple Watch showing the highest accuracy across devices." The product page footnote describes it as "an Apple-conducted study of heart rate accuracy, during July and August 2026."
Apple's white paper, published at apple.com/HRAccuracy, is more detailed than most vendor claims, and it deserves credit for that. According to the paper:
- 1,460 people enrolled and 1,254 contributed at least one paired comparison to the final analysis.
- The reference was a Polar H10 ECG chest strap. Participants wore an Apple Watch on one wrist and a competing device on the other, with the wrist assignment randomized.
- Comparison devices were the latest models from Garmin, Google, Huawei, Samsung and WHOOP, plus an Oura ring worn on the index finger. The ring was left out of strength training because Oura advises against wearing it while lifting.
- Activities included outdoor runs at various speeds, indoor treadmill interval runs, outdoor cycling, HIIT, strength training, and a "Daily Living" protocol (rest, desk work, meal preparation, walking).
- The study ran at five sites. Apple ran two in Cupertino and one in Austin, and a third-party contract research organization ran the sites in San Diego and Selangor, Malaysia. Fifty-nine percent of analyzed participants were enrolled at the contract-run sites.
- Across 159 activity-by-metric comparisons, Apple reports that Apple Watch was better at 99% confidence in 139, the result was indeterminate in 18, and the comparison device was more accurate in 2. Both were Google's watch at rest, by under 0.5 bpm.
That is a serious design: pre-specified sample sizes, a recognized reference standard, and results reported against named competitors. It is still a manufacturer study. Apple chose the protocol, the data streams and the analysis, and the paper is a white paper, not a peer-reviewed publication. Until someone independent repeats it, the fair phrasing is "the most accurate heart rate tracking of the devices Apple tested, according to Apple."
One detail in the paper matters for anyone who exports data. Apple says it used an internal logging app to capture the five-second values shown on the watch, "because background data is only published to HealthKit every 30 seconds to manage device memory."
